Newspapers are printed on newsprint, which is an uncoated groundwood paper. Groundwood paper is made by grinding wood pulp without first removing lignin and other components of wood pulp. Groundwood paper is different from paper made from chemically produced pulp, such as office paper. According to the US EPA, 18% or 2.3 million tons of the newspapers generated in 1993 were advertising inserts printed on groundwood paper. In 1992, Waste Age initiated the Waste Product Profile series -- brief, factual listings of the solid waste management characteristics of materials in the waste stream. This popular series of profiles highlighted a product, explained how it fit into integrated waste management systems, and provided current data on recycling and markets for the product. This article updates information presented in No. 2 of that series with 1993 data.
