Air-water exchange and dry deposition of PAHs and PCBs in southern Lake Michigan near the urban-industrial complex of Chicago, IL was estimated as part of the AEOLOS (Atmospheric Exchange Over Lakes and Oceans) Project. Air and water samples were collected simultaneously in intensive experiments over and in the lake during May and July 1994 and January 1995 in order to examine the influence of enhanced atmospheric concentrations of PCBs and PAHs on air-water fluxes and dry deposition in the coastal waters of Lake Michigan proximate to the Chicago urban-industrial plume. In addition, air samples (G/P) were collected simultaneously in Chicago and at South Haven (MI) across the lake. Dry particle deposition was assessed using aerodynamic dry deposition plates located in the urban plume and at several locations around the lake and estimated from particle-size distributions of PCBs and PAHs. The net direction of air-water exchange in the southern quadrant of the lake on an annual basis is from the air to the water for both PCBs and PAHs. Dry particle deposition and air-water fluxes in the southern Lake Michigan plume of Chicago are major contributors to the total loading to the lake.
