The role of photovoltaic (PV) systems in utility applications has increased immensely in the past decade. PV systems are often selected over other options for remote applications because they are more cost-effective and more reliable. Having demonstrated their effectiveness in small sizes, the PV systems are now being considered for distributed, grid-connected applications, such as substation upgrades. These newer applications will utilize systems up to one megawatt (MW) in size. The expanding role of PV as a utility option depends not only upon improvements in cost and performance, but improvements in reliability as well. Reliability is not just a product of the manufacturing process. It is ensured both by adequate knowledge of the solar resource and other climatic factors and by proper testing, design, and installation. This chapter reviews advancements in PV system design achieved during the last decade. It addresses cost and production and briefly surveys the various uses of PV systems by today`s utilities. Also described are several technical activities being conducted by the private sector and the Photovoltaics Program of the US Department of Energy (DOE). Most importantly, up-to-date sources are provided for more detailed information of interest to the designer or potential user. 46 refs., 34 figs., 10 tabs.
