Repetitively Pulsed Accelerator Boosters
- General Dynamics Corp., San Diego, CA (United States)
Several years ago it occurred to us that a very high peak power level short burst reactor could be built by bombarding a supercritical fast reactor with the electron beam from a high current linear accelerator. This approach is different than that used in the design of the Harwell Linac booster which runs at relatively low multiplication and peak power levels, at very short pulse widths, and at relatively high repetition rates for intermediate energy neutron spectroscopy. The concept of the high flux booster has been explored for the last three years in a theoretical and experimental program conducted at General Atomic for the Defense Atomic Support Agency.* The objective of this work has been to study the production of single very high intensity pulses with controllable pulse width. This type of device was desired for diagnostic studies of transient radiation effects in electronic components.
