We describe a preamp-amplifier-discriminator module that was developed for the CTEN (combined thermal-epithermal neutron) waste assay system. The CTEN system uses a pulsed-neutron interrogation technique to quantify the amount of low-level transuranic waste contained in a waste drum. Epithermal neutrons are used to determine the effects of self-shielding in lumps of fissile material. In order to enhance the measurement of epithermal neutrons, we were required to develop new front-end electronics. We describe the module developed and the techniques used to improve performance.
