The paramagnetic Ru(III) complex [Cp*RuCl{sub 2}]{sub n}, where Cp* is {eta}{sup 5}-C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}, reacts with atmospheric O{sub 2} to form the oxo-bridging Ru{sup IV} complex (Cu*RuCl{sub 2}){sub 2}O. This complex cocrystallizes with dibenzothiophene (DBT) to give (Cp*RuCl{sub 2}){sub 2}O-DBT (1) as blackish brown crystals. A single-crystal X-ray structural analysis of 1 (monoclinic, P2{sub 1}ln (No. 14); a = 9.16 (2) {angstrom}, b = 16.8 (1) {Angstrom}, c = 10.75 (6) {Angstrom}; {beta} = 97.1(2){sup 0}; V = 1639 (9) {angstrom}{sup 3}) shows that the (Cp*RuCl{sub 2}){sub 2}O component contains a linear Ru-O-Ru unit with significant {pi}-bonding, which also accounts for the diamagnetism of the complex. 18 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs.
