Bimetallic iron complexes with carboxyethylene bridges
- Univ. of Louisville, KY (United States)
Reactions of the iron metallocarboxylate anion CpFe(CO)(PPh{sub 3})COO{sup {minus}}K{sup +} (1) with ethylene-coordinated cations CpFe(CO)(L)(C{sub 2}H{sub 4}){sup +}BF{sub 4}{sup {minus}} (L = PPh{sub 3}, P(OPh){sub 3}) yield bimetallic complexes with a carboxyethylene bridge (3a,b); a pair of diastereomers, formed in nearly equal amounts, is produced in each case. Reactions of the bimetallic compounds with excess HBF{sub 4} yield CpFe(CO){sub 2}(PPh{sub 3}){sup +}BF{sub 4}{sup {minus}} and CpFe(CO)(L)(C{sub 2}H{sub 4}){sup +}BF{sub 4}{sup {minus}}. Methanolysis of the carboxyethylene complexes yields CpFe(CO)(PPh{sub 3})COOCH{sub 3} and CpFe(CO)(L)CH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}OCH{sub 3} (7a,b). Solvolysis of the latter compounds in ethanol gives the corresponding ethoxyethyl complexes 8a,b. All new compounds have been fully characterized. 11 refs.
