Determination of water concentrations of PCBs in the Saginaw River using SPMDs, caged fish and sediment

A study to assess the bioavailable PCB water concentrations at six sites on the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay, Michigan, using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs), caged fish, and sediment, is presented. SPMD and caged fish were deployed for 30--35 days and total PCB concentrations ranged from 100 ng/g to 1,000 ng/g in the SPMDs and caged fish. The PCB patterns of the three matrices were compared using principle components analysis (PCA) and were determined to be similar for the caged fish and SPMDS. Water concentrations of PCB congeners were calculated from PCB congener concentrations in SPMDS, concentrations in the caged channel catfish, and the concentrations of PCBs found in sediments. Water concentrations of PCBs were estimated from uptake rate constants (SPMDs and caged fish) or equilibrium partition models (sediments). The uncertainties associated with each of these methods will be presented. Finally, concentrations and patterns of PCBs in feral fish collected from the river at the same time are compared to SPMDs and caged fish.
