Funnel-and-gate technique offers passive ground-water restoration

An innovative system for in situ treatment of contaminated ground water, dubbed the {open_quotes}funnel-and-gate{close_quotes} technique, has been developed at the Waterloo Centre for Groundwater Research (University of Waterloo-Waterloo, Ontario). In this system, low-permeability, converging vertical barriers (the funnel) are installed just downstream of a contaminant plume. An engineered gap at the throat of the funnel, referred to as the gate, allows passage of the plume through the barrier. In the gate, a reactive medium is positioned or released so that contaminated ground water is treated as it passes through. 3 refs., 2 figs.
