This paper addresses the real-time aspect of the Economic Dispatch problem. It describes an approach to perform real-time modeling and monitoring of the steam electric unit control parameters, and the use of the real-time measurements on the on-line Economic Dispatch algorithm. Dispatch performed with accurate up to the minute information allows the fuel usage and the unit emissions to be minimized. The problem formulation and unit data modeling for real-time DCS-EMS operations is presented. A set of measuring points is described that can be used to provide unit fuel efficiency, and emission output. The paper describes the Economic Dispatch interface that takes into account the current unit conditions and incorporates the real-time measurements in order to optimize fuel usage, and minimize emissions. The dynamic nature of the problem is presented, and the incorporation of a multivariable {open_quotes}look-ahead{close_quotes} dynamic dispatch that results in unit trajectories used to minimize unit oscillations.
