Polarized infrared spectroscopy of methane adsorbed on alkali halide surfaces
- Indiana Univ., Bloomington, IN (United States)
Methane adsorbed on single crystal alkali halide surfaces has been studied by several experimental and theoretical techniques. The methane molecule on NaCl has been variously assigned to conformations with three hydrogens against the surface (tripod), or with two hydrogens against the surface-(dipod), or to an intermediate conformation. Polarized infrared spectroscopy has proven to be a sensitive probe of adsorbed molecule orientation and may help decide the adlayer structure. The polarized infrared spectrum of CH{sub 4}, CD{sub 4}, and CH{sub 2}D{sub 2}, on NaCl(100) and KBr(100) will be described. Analysis of the isotopic spectra for both substrates will be discussed and adlayer structures proposed.
