RE-ASSESSMENT OF MEASUREMENTS OF FAST NEUTRON DAMAGE IN GRAPHITE MADE IN DIDO AND BEPO

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4556037
The experiments of graphite damage in various neutron spectra have been analysed in the past with Monte-Carlo methods. Although the different measurements have been demonstrated to be broadly consistent some discrepancies remained which were judged to be significant. This report describes work to try and reduce these discrepances for the DIDO, PLUTO and BEPO reactors. Monte-Carlo calculations were made with SPECIFIC, as these give the best available treatment of the energy variable, but transport theory calculations were also made using WIMS as these are cheaper and avoid problems of statistical uncertainty. Broad agreement has been achieved between irradiations in DIDO/PLUTO hollow fuel elements and the BEPO T.E. 10 experimental holes, but some discrepancies remain for the hollow fuel pin experiments in BEPO.
