Ultimate strength analysis of a midship transverse frame in an offshore production ship is carried out. The ultimate transverse strength is obtained by calculating the ultimate pressure load which is related to the dynamic pressure by an ultimate dynamic load factor. Two load cases are accounted for, namely, full draft, cargo hold empty, and minimum draft, tank full. For the analyzed frame, ultimate failures occur at the deck, bottom or in the area connecting the deck and the side. By modelling both the collapse pressure and dynamic pressure as random variables, reliability analysis is performed for the ultimate collapse limit state. The estimated annual failure probability levels are found to be negligible, indicating that the frame failure mode does not seem to contribute to the system collapse.
