A new turbulence model, based upon dynamic and thermal turbulent time scale transport equations, is developed and applied to wall-bounded shear flows. The new model comprises transport equations for the turbulent kinetic energy, the dynamic time scale, the fluctuating temperature variance, and the thermal time scale. It offers conceptually parallel modelling of the dynamic and thermal turbulence at the two-equation level, and eliminates the customary prescription of an empirical turbulent Prandtl number, thus permitting a more generalized prediction capability for turbulent heat transfer in complex flows and geometries. Predictions of the new model, along with those from three other similar models, are compared with direct numerical simulation results and universal correlations for incompressible fully-developed channel flow with constant applied heat flux. The new model showed some improved predictions relative to the other models, and its relatively simpler formulation should prove useful in more complex flows, since all of the other models rely upon the numerically difficult requirement of computing accurate derivatives at the wall to ensure the proper near-wall balance of their dissipation-rate transport equations.
