Reactive coating of zircon on mullite and mullite-alumina substrates

Journal Article · · Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A stable zirconia coating of 20--30 {micro}m thickness on a mullite substrate with a different alumina/silica ratio was obtained by reactive coating of zircon. It is shown that the Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/SiO{sub 2} ratio of the mullite substrate drastically affects the morphology of the zirconia coating. The results are explained on the basis of the Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-SiO{sub 2}-ZrO{sub 2} phase equilibria.
