At the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe (KfK), Germany, a new flexible He refrigerator/liquefier with a 4.4 K equivalent cooling power of 2 kW has been installed. The plant will be used to test superconducting model coils for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in the TOSKA UP facility as well as for other cryogenic experiments. The calculated simultaneous basic capacity of the refrigerator is 700 W at 3.3 K, 400 W at 4.4 K, 1000 W at 70 K, and 4 g/s liquefaction. Refrigeration can be increased with liquid nitrogen precooling and also with liquid He from the 10,000 L storage tank. The pure helium liquefaction rate was measured to be 21 g/s with LN{sub 2} precooling. For the cooldown of large magnet systems, 22 kW are available down to 80 K. The main components are 3 screw compressors, a coldbox (with 3 turbines), a valvebox (with subcooler) and an industrial process control system. This paper reports about the layout and performance tests of the refrigerator as well as about the first operating experience.
