Generation of hydrogen negative ions in a low-voltage cesium-hydrogen discharge in a hollow cathode
- A.F. Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute, 26 Polytechnicheskaya, St. Petersburg (Russia)
Two modes of the low-voltage cesium-hydrogen discharge are investigated: the Knudsen discharge and the low-voltage discharge in the interior of a hollow cathode. The results of the first theoretical investigation of the low-voltage cesium-hydrogen discharge in a hollow cathode are described in the present communication. In consequence of a hollow cathode geometry, the optimum plasma parameters for negative hydrogen generation may be achieved in the interior of a hollow cathode at a sufficiently low value of the emission current from the inner surface of a hollow cathode. Also, it is essential that the hollow cathode with moving plasma in the interior, containing high negative hydrogen concentration, may be regarded as an effective practical negative hydrogen source.
