Jim Walter Resources, Inc., Mining Division is the world`s largest producer of Blue Creek coal. Coal from the Blue Creek seam, located in the heart of Alabama`s coal-rich Warrior Basin, has been utilized by customers on five continents to meet rigid metallurgical and thermal specifications. The Division`s four deep, vertical shaft mines operate at depths up to 2,300 feet (700 meters), currently making them the deepest vertical shaft coal mines in North America. The state`s largest underground mine is the Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWRI) No. 4 mine in Tuscaloosa County with a production of 2,398,289 short tons in 1989. With some 50 million tons in reserve, the mine has a minimum life of 20 years.
