We apply a coupled-channel theory in configuration space to study {ital K}{sup +} nucleus inelastic scattering. The model consists of a phenomenological optical potential fixed for agreement with elastic scattering data and a microscopic inelastic transition potential derived from the elementary {ital K}{sup +}-nucleon {ital t} matrix. We calculate the differential cross sections for the reaction {sup 12}C({ital K}{sup +},{ital K}{sup +}){sup 12}C{sup *} and find that the coupled-channel contribution is small and limited to forward angles, and that single-step calculations are in agreement with inelastic scattering data.
