Torque magnetometry has been used to investigate anisotropy in the superconducting state of YNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C. The data indicate that the superconducting effective mass in this material is remarkably isotropic. On the basis of this result, it is argued that the homologous compound HoNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C provides an example of a material in which superconducting anisotropy results from layers of localized spins.
