Animals fatally injured by effects of the Cannikin detonation on Amchitka Island were subjected to post mortem examination, and representative tissues were studied microscopically. From evidence so obtained, in combination with other information, it was concluded that three mechanisms were involved in producing the range of lesions observed: rock-falls; vertical acceleration; and combined effects of over- and underpressures. Because of the scarcity of injured but still living mammals, it appears that the rate of mortality was high among those that were diving in the cricical areas at the time of the detonation, but those a the surface probably were uninjured.
