Crack arrest in an increasing K-field
From 2nd international congress for pressure vessel and piping technology; San Antonio, Texas, USA (1 Oct 1973). See CONF-731003-P2. Crack arrest mechanisms in low and intermediate strength steels under conditions of constant loading rate and increasing loading, or stress intensity (K/sub 1/) rate were studied in order to define a limiting rate which would result in conservative fracture toughness values. The test equipment and methods are described. Contoured double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens were used in the zero-K-gradient tests. Single-edge-notched (SEN) specimens were used for measuring toughness in the positive-K-gradient tests. From the limited test series, it was concluded that crack arrest toughness (K/sub Ia/) as measured in an increasing K field with SEN specimens is the same as K/sub Ia/ measured with a contoured DCB specimen having a zero-K-gradient.
