Several new copper oxychlorides with the K{sub 2}NiF{sub 4}-type and related structures (the O2(n-1)n where n=1, 2 and 3, and the O222 structures) are synthesized using a high pressure technique. These are (Ca,K){sub 2}CuO{sub 2}Cl{sub 2} (T{sub c} = 24 K), Ba{sub 2}CuO{sub 2}Cl{sub 2} for the O201; (Sr, Ca){sub 3}Cu{sub 2}O{sub 4+{delta}}Cl{sub 2{minus}y} (T{sub c} = 80 K) for the O212; (Sr, Ca){sub 4}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{delta}}Cl{sub 2{minus}y} (T{sub c} = 46 K) for the O223; CaLnCuO{sub 3}Cl (Ln= Y, Ho, Er) for the O222. Hole carrier doping to induce superconductivity and size tuning of the CuO{sub 2} sheet are attained in these new oxychlorides.
