Exploring the Gulf of Mexico - for a second time

Back in the late 1980s, a lot of smart people in the exploration business were convinced that the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) was the {degrees}Dead Sea.{close_quotes} And there were plenty of good reasons to think so: the deep water was too expensive-the shelf had lost its appeal-not many wells were being drilled. Hope for continued exploration or significant additional reserves was inconceivable. How the oil and gas industry advances technology and experience to extract hydrocarbons from beneath impeding salt domes in the GOM is discussed.
