Soil gas monitoring is used at many sites as a preliminary method for determining the extent and/or source of contamination. Although it is best suited to detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), soil gas monitoring has also been used to detect semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and to predict the distribution of nonvolatile compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A number of soil gas monitoring techniques are available, including passive and active approaches. 4 refs., 3 tabs. 1 fig.
