On the projected hartree-fock (projection before variation) method

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics. A
A study is made of the projected Hartree- Fock method for nuclei, formulated on the basls of the appropriate Brillouin condition. Several versions of the method are considered in connection with its use to approximate exact eigenstates of internal Hamiltonians of usual symmetry. The versions differ by what good quantum numbers are covered by the projection operator. The stability conditions are derived and used to study the nature of the solutions with consistent symmetry restrictions on the individual orbitals. Solutions of this type are shown to be unstable provided the projection includes the relevant symmetry. This result is used to compare some versions of the method and to show the superiority of the version based on the projection operator covering all symmetries. Some computational aspects of the application of the method are discussed.
