Finite element modeling and verification of thermal-mechanical behavior in the weld pool region
- Sandia National Labs., Livermore, CA (United States)
Experimental and numerical investigations of the strains and temperatures around a weld pool in an aluminum Houldcroft solidification cracking susceptibility specimen are presented. These quantities are discussed with regards to modeling solidification cracking, in which cracks form in the liquid+solid region of a solidifying weld pool. A model for the melting and solidification of 6061 aluminum is constructed using lever rule and Scheil formulations. This solidification behavior is used to simulate how the solidification model affects temperatures and solidification profiles in the mushy zone. Thermocouple measurements and strains near the weld (obtained using video techniques) are used to evaluate finite element models. Good agreement was obtained for both temperature histories near the weld and average strain across the weld for a plate that does not crack. Improvements for constitutive models and prediction of crack initiation are discussed.
