Calculations of the residual stresses of a butt weld

A FE program is developed to calculate the residual stresses in the 2D and 3D heat treated steel components. The program is verified and correlated with analytical solutions and a variety of mechanical and x-ray measurements of the residual stresses. For a weld model, the program calculates the transient temperatures at about 50 to 100 time steps. At each step, phase transformations are calculated and all material properties are interpolated for the temperatures and micro structures. The elastic-plastic deformations and stresses are calculated iteratively for the combined thermal mechanical loading plus the plastic deformation histories accumulated during the previous time steps. The time stepping continues until the temperature reaches the room temperature and the stresses at the last time step are the residual stresses. A butt weld is simulated by a progressing intensive local heating of the steel plate where the heat source moves as if the weld proceeds. The weld cools down fast due to the conduction from the weld to the lower temperature portion of the welded plate. To the environment, the heat transfer is slow. Two welding speeds are analyzed. A ductile and lower residual stress weld is calculated when the weld progressed slower.
