Two-dimensional buoyancy-driven flow inside a horizontal circular cylinder is modeled using the finite element method. Incompressibility is imposed via the penalty function approximation and convective stability is maintained through the use of a Petrov-Galerkin method. Results are presented for Rayleigh numbers 5 {times} 10{sup 3} {le} Ra {le} 5 {times} 10{sup 7} and unit Prandtl Number.
