This is the eighteenth Quarterly Status Report of work under AEC Contract AT(04-3)-400 and the twelfth Quarterly Status Report of work under AEC Contract AT(04-3)-515, both held by Stanford University. Contract AT(04-3)-400 provides for the construction of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), a laboratory that will have as its chief instrument a two-mile-long linear electron accelerator. Construction of the Center began in June 1962. The principal beam parameters of the accelerator in its initial operating phase are a maximum beam energy of 20 BeV, and an average beam current of 30 microamperes (at 10% beam loading). The electron beam was first activated in May 1966. In June 1966, a beam energy of 18.4 BeV was achieved. Beam currents up to 15 microamperes have been obtained. The estimated construction cost of SLAC is $114,000,000.
