Computer-detected errors in the magnetic tape version of the JCPDS x-ray powder diffraction file (sets 1-22)

The x-ray powder-diffraction data file of the JCPDS -Joint Committee for Powder Diffraction Standards) exists presently in two primary forms. One is the 3'' x 5'' cards on which the principal data has been published for many years. The other form is the JCPDS magnetic tape which is now used for the preparation of index books as well as for distribution for use with various computerized powder pattern identification programs. The data present on the magnetic tape is derived from the information on the 3'' x 5'' cards so that the cards are the prime reference source for the magnetic tape. During computer processing of the powder diffraction data as supplied by the JCPDS a number of possible deficiencies, inconsistencies and errors were discovered in the magnetic tape version of the file; these errors are listed in Table I. A previous report (SCL- DR-70-48) discussed prior errors, the sources of these errors, and the computer programs developed to detect them. This report lists and discusses the additional errors found.
