From international conference on the bases of the biological effects of ultraviolet radiation; Brno, Czechoslovakia (2 Oct 1972). Following irradiation of phages T/sub 3/, T/sub 7/, and the HCR/sup -/ suspec table type of T/sub 5/ (T/ sub 5/ B) with long wavelength uv light, in the presence of 8- methoxypsoralen, survival was assayed on a variety of E. coli host strains differing in known dark- repair functions. In some experiments survival was assayed in the presence or absence of caffeine, at a concentration of 500 mu g/ml, to effect phenotypic blockage of the HCR, excision repair, system. Results show that in the case of phages T/sub 3/ and T/sub 7/ the photosensitized damage is repaired by excision repair, and to a lesser extent by the host cell rec gene system. No influence of exr or pol A gene functions on phage survival was found. In the case of phage T/ sub 5/ B damage by long wavelength UV + 8-methoxysoralen is repaired by the HCR (excision repair) and pol A systems, but no effect of exr or rec host genes on phage survival was found.
