Particulate and gaseous atmospheric iodine concentrations

From symposium on the physical behavior of radioactive containment in the atmosphere, Vienna, Austria (12 Nov 1973). Large-volume air sampling equipment was used to collect routine panticulate and gaseous iodine samples. Filter paper and activated charcoal beds were used to collect particulate and gaseous iodine fractions, respectively, from the atmosphere. Samples were collected for two-week periods over several years at Barrow, Alaska; Great Falls, Montana; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and at several locations in the state of Washington. The samples were analyzed by gamma spectrometry for gamma-emitting radionuclides. Beta-gamma coincidence spectrometry was used for lowlevel /sup 131/I analyses. Neutron activation analysis was used to measure the natural iodine (/sup 127I) and /sup 129/I content of the samples. Results of these measurements are summarized. Seasonal variations were noted in the observed isotopic concentrations. The ratio of particulate to gaseous iodine was observed to vary with time and isotope. The significance of the data in the formulation of atmospheric dispersion models and prediction of environmental impacts is discussed. (auth)
