Disaggregation of polysomes in rat thymus following whole-body x irradiation

Journal Article · · Indian J. Biochem. Biophys., v. 8, no. 4, pp. 254-256
OSTI ID:4422552
Polysomal profiles of the rat thymus examined at 18 and 48 hr following whole-body exposure to x rays (600 R) exhibited shifts from heavier aggregates towards monosomes. These changes were accompanied by significant increase in alkaline ribonuclease (RNase) activity with concomitant decrease in alkaline RNase inhibitor levels. The results suggest that disaggregation of polysomes after irradiation may be the consequence of activation of alkaline RNase resulting from the fall in the levels of the inhibitor. (auth)
