From first international conference on stable isotopes in chemistry, biology, and medicine; Argonne, Illinois, USA (9 May 1973). Proceedings of the first international conference on stable isotopes in chemistry, biology, and medicine. Toxicity tests for /sup 18/O were undertaken by supplying in one series of experiments all the water drunk by mice as H/sub 2//sup 18/O and in another series of experiments enriching both water drunk and oxygen breathed with /sup 18/O. At the same time, studies were made on the isotopic incorporation of oxygen into various organs and on the effect of high /sup 18/O-concentrations on reproductive behavior. No toxic effects were observed due to breathing and drinking /sup 18/O enriched air and water during the 60 day experimental period. Oxygen-18 concentrations were high in body water, low in bone and lungs, and high in blood and kidneys. (ERB)
