In 1968, UNSCEAR recommended that a survey on the contamination of biological materials such as human bone was encouraged on areas where only fragmentary information was available. In Brazil, samples were collected from individuals who died in Rio de Janeiro from accidents. These samples were first classed according to social level in very poor and poor groups. Results showed that levels fround in the Brazilian age groups were close to the ones observed in Chile (1969), Argentina, and Australia Senegal, and Jamaica (1969). The results obtained from the North and South hemispheres respectively were compared. It was noticed a more pronounced decrease in the levels of /sup 90/Sr in bones from populations of the North hemisphere, indicating that recent atmospheric tests undertaken by French in the Pacific, contributed in a slight way to increase the / sup 90/Sr content of the diet of some regions of South America.
