Fiz., Pis'ma Red.; 18: No. 3, The hydromagnetic instability in toroidal traps of round cross section without a longitudinal current, first proposed by Spitzer, is studied. It is shown that such traps are hydromagnetically stable at plasma pressures exceeding the pressure of the effective poloidal magnetic field. (auth)
