Inner-shell ionization by heavy ions in the MeV energy range

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4419029
From 8th international conference on the physics of electronic and atomic collisions; Belgrade, Yugoslavia (16 Jul 1973). A survey is given of recent work on inner-shell ionization by heavy ions with Z/sub 1/ > 4 at collision energies of 5 to 100 MeV. Current data are from Van de Graaff, cyclotron, and HILAC facilities and include: high resolution x-ray and Auger- electron spectra, vacancy-production cross sections for a wide range of ion-atom systems and energies, the dependence of some of these cross sections on the incident-ion charge state and impact parameter, systematic studies of the multiple ionization which is characteristic of heavy-ion collisions, and measurements of the resultant changes in the fluorescence yields. Ionization mechanisms, united-atom phenomena, and the effects of nuclear Coulomb excitation are discussed. (auth)
