High energy particles in cosmic radiation; Chastitsy vysokikh energii v kosmicheskikh luchakh
The ionization calorimeter as a method of determining primary cosmic ray energies from 10/sup 11/ to 5 x 10/sup 12/ ev is discussed. ionization detectors in hodoscopic array and scintillation counters are discussed. Methods of studying the interaction chnracteristics of cosmlc rays of known energy with atomic nuclei are discussed under the following headings: combining a Wilson chamber and spark chamber with an ionization calorimeter, counting electronphoton cascades by nuclear photoemulsions. probability of finding showers in nuclear emulsions from ionization chamber readings, the use of controlled nuclear photoemulsions in large piles to count showers, methods of accelerating the search for electromagnetic cascades in nuclear emulsions, and timed selection of electron-photon showers as shown by nuclear emulsions. The role of pions from high energy cosmic rays in the lower parts of the atmosphere, young'' atmospheric showers, a study of the interaction characteristics of particles having energies greater than 10/sup 12/ eV with light atomic nuclei by the use of controlled nuclear photoemulsions, the generation of high energy pions in cosmic rays, and a study of the interaction characteristics of hadrons with matter by means of the ionization calorimeter and the Wilson chamber are considered. The outlook for studying cosmic ray particles of very high energy on earth and in space is given. (SJR)
