Noise control guidelines for compressor stations
- HFP Accoustical Consultants Ltd., Calgary, AB (Canada)
The Pipeline Research Committee (PRC) undertook the development of Guidelines for implementing engineering noise control for compressor stations. The product of the work contains a series of standardized Guidelines that could be used by gas transmission companies to develop their own specifications for noise control, applicable for new compressor package design as well as existing compressor station retrofit. The context of the work is to identify each party`s responsibilities towards achieving the intended results, which should inherently lead to more successful noise control projects. These Guidelines strive to draw a distinction between that equipment which are noise generators, sound attenuators or acoustic radiators, as each require a different specification format. The technical contents of the project report contains eleven stand-alone guidelines that can be used to prepare specifications for major compressor station equipment, that can be incorporated into standard gas transmission company specifications. A complete Guideline or a portion of it could be adopted to suit the individual project management approach. As a separate aspect of the work, a high temperature microphone probe was researched, developed and tested. This piece of hardware allows optional diagnostical testing of the engine exhaust noise component. These diagnostics can assist in isolating the noise generated by the engine versus the attenuation provided by the silencer. Specifically the high temperature microphone probe allows exhaust noise measurements directly in hot exhaust gas flows without the removal of the silencer.
