The possibility of describing the invariance groups in the infinite- momentum class of references is studied, first with a physically plausible limiting process on the Poincare group, and then applying a definltion of contraction to the same Poincare group. It is shown how the former does not lead to any group structure, although the two procedures are proven to be equivalent for the corresponding Lie algebras, through a theorem given in the Appendix.
