Title: Decays of $sup 39$Ca and $sup 41$Sc

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., C, v. 8, no. 2, pp. 657-659
OSTI ID:4413717

The decays of /sup 39/Ca and /sup 41/Sc have been studied because of the rela ted interest in the magnitude of ihe axial coupling constant in nuclear matter. /sup 39/Ca was produced in the /sup 39/K(p, n) Ca reaction at E/sub E/su b p/ = 10 MeV and its half-life was measured as 860.4 + 3.0 msec resulting in an ft value of 4283 plus or minus 25 sec. The half-life of /sup 41/Sc, formed in the /sup 40/Ca(p, gamma )/sup 41/Sc reaction with 3-MeV protons on thick Ca, is 596.3 PP 1.7 msec. From the gamma -ray energies of 2882.6 plus or minus 0.3 keV and 3696.9 plus or minus 0.5 keV measured at the 1.84- and 2.68-MeV resonances the Q value of the /sup 40/Ca(p, gamma )/sup -41/Sc reaction is found to be 1085.7 plus or minus 1.4 keV. This leads to a /sup 41/Sc mass excess of - 28642.2 plus or minus 1.7 keV, to a /sup 41/Sc decay energy of 6494.9 plus or minus 2.0 keV, and to an ft value of 2849 plus or minus 9 sec. An upper limit of 2 x 10/sup -3/ is placed on the BETA branching of /sup 41/Sc to ex cited states of /sup 41/Ca. If the free-space value of g/sub A/ is used to extract the Gamow-Teller matrix element < sigma > expo from these data we find < sigma >exp/< sigma >sp values of 0.685 plus or minus 0.009 and 0.761 plus or minus 0.006 for /sup 39/C a and /sup 41/Sc, respectively, where the < sigma >s,p are the relevant single-parti cle matrix elements.
