Today the automatic analysis of small amounts of toxic substances and metabolites is an important task of and environmental control but still expensive. Only a few sensors are able to detect neutral molecules in liquids specifically and most of them work off-line. Development of Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM)-sensors designed for on-line detection of organic in aqueous systems is discussed. Chemical resonant sensors are easy to fabricate, due to their frequency analogous output compatible to digital electronics and customary configurable to the analyte of interest with chemically sensitive and selective organic coatings. Basically designed to measure surface mass changes, e.g. via analyte adsorption, QCM in liquids is considerable more complex. The observed frequency shift is not only caused by the mass effect also the viscous coupling with the liquid at the quartz surface, surface roughness, occurring surface stresses, changing liquid properties and even the driver electronics can change the sensor signal. QCM as biosensor is already well known and based on the specific bioreceptor-ligand (analytes) interactions and the high molecular mass of these bioanalytes. The authors aim is the application of QCM as specific chemical sensor for substances in liquids with molecular masses between 80 and 200 g/mol.
