Gilbert proposes short lead-time coal-fueled combined cycle

The design of a 150-Mw commercial coalgas-powered combinedcycle plant is proposed. Inputs to the Gilbert gasifier are preheated air and powdered coal, sized to 5 mm X O. The air, entering through a grate at the bottom, will produce a fluidized bed, avoiding the caking problem of fixed-bed gasifiers. A small portion of the coal's carbon will be oxidized to CO, supplying enough heat to drive off the volatiles. The resultant fuel gas will have a heat value of about 250 BTU per cubic foot. The gas fuels the gas turbine part of the plant, after passing through the gasifier-air preheater, a cleanup system, and a compressor. The system is proportioned so that the gas turbine generates 30 percent of the total power. The gasifier convents only a small part of the coal to fuel gas, with char remaining that contains almost all the ash from the original coal and one-half the sulfur. The char is sent to the Ignifluid boiler to fuel the steam side of the cycle. Following the boiler are a feedwater economizer section, a low-pressure boiler, and a conventional steam turbine-generator system. The complexity of removing sulfur is a drawback, and the biggest advantage is that it will operate with high-ash coal, including fuel recovered from waste piles or waste of present mining operations.
