Quasilinear relaxation of a monoenergetic relativistic electron beam in an external magnetic field

The quasilinear relaxation of ihe longitudinal oscillations of a monoenergetac relativistic electron beam is considered in a bounded r relaxation of such a beam leads to a smearing out of velocities into a Maxwellian distribution with an anisotropic temperature, as in the absence of a magnetic field. The quasilinear relaxation time, the velocity distribution of the beam electrons, and the amplitude of stable longitudinal waves are determined. It is shown that in a strong external magnetic field the quasilinear relaxation time and the energy of stable oscillations depend critically on the field strengh. (auth)
