Absolute rate constants for the reactions of OH radicals with CH/sub 2/ CH/sub 2/ were determined at 298 deg K. Hydroxyl radicals were generated in the puised vacuumuv photolysis of H/sub 2/O. Decays of OH were monitored by resonance fluorescence in an excess of hydrocarbons. The rate constants for the reactions with propylene and ethylene were determined to be 1.45 plus or minus 0.22 x 10/sup -11/ and 3 plus or minus 1 x 10/sup -12/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup - 1/ sec/sup -1/, respectively. The kinetic isotope effect for deuterated propylene was found to be small, thus supporting the proposed addition mechanism. (GE)
