An absolute calibration of electrostatic accelerators in the energy region from 0.7 MeV to 2.1 MeV

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instruments and Methods
The resonances of the reaction 27Al(p, gamma )28Si in the energy ran ge Ep = 0.7 to 2.1 MeV have been used to determine the calibration constant of a magnetic proton beam-energy analyzer very precisely. As well-defined calibration points the midpoints in the rise of thick-target resonance-yield curves were used. The calibration constant has been determined differentially, measuring the proton-energy differences between the resonances via de-excitation gamma -rays using a Ge(Li) detector. After the calibration constant was precisely determined, the absolute calibration energies of the resonances were obtained. The well-known 992 keV 27Al(p, gamma )28 Si resonance was determined to be 991.97 plus or minus 0.07 keV. The accuracy of the calibration energies obtained competes with the accuracy achieved using the absolute rf-cavity velocity gauge.
