Radiation-induced copolymerization of tetrafluoroethylene with ethylene in solution was investigated by employing various chlorofluorohydrocarbons as solvent. The maximum copolymerization rate was obtained at the mole fraction of monomers in the range of 0.3 to 0.4. The rate was proportional to half or one power of the dose rate depending on the solvents used. The molecular weights of the copolymers were evaluated by a novel method based on activation analysis. The copolymer showed a crystalline structure composed of a repeating unit, (--CH/ sub 2/-- CH/sub 2/--CF/sub 2/ CF/sub 2/--), which was found out by the studies of sequence distribution of each monomer, melting temperature, and x-ray analysis.
