By means of the phage 861, the genetic marker for methicillin resistance could be transferred to a methicillin sensitive receptor strain of Staphylococcus aureus. Donor strains stenimed from Switzerland, England, Australia, and the USA. The transduction succeeded only when the transduction lysate was exposed to uv radiation. The genetic code for resistance was localized in chromosomes. (HBG)
