Positronium and muonium

Book ·
OSTI ID:4407703
A review is given of the properties of free positronium, with special emphasis being given to the latest values obtained by measurements. The properties discussed include the fine structure (Feynman diagrams for ground state Ps), Zeeman energy levels in the n = 1 and n = 2 states, the annihilation rates of ground state positronium in gases and porous materials. The discussion of properties of muonium is malnly concerned with the hyperfine structure interval in the ground state and the Zeeman effect which determines the muon spin and muon magnetic moment. The measurements of both positronium and muonium were made mainly by microwave resonance or magnetic resonance experiments respectively. A comparison of the fine structure constant, as found by the different precision measurements, is made. The behavior of positive muons in liquid He is briefly discussed with respect to free muon precession, muonium Larmor precession, and for depolarization of the muon spin. (GE)
